Then there are the low cardboard trays that cases of cat food come on. Louie loves sitting on them, carefully flattening the rims down and then sculpting the edges. Just like Goldie, Shade, and Banshee's mom, i'm not thrilled about constantly having to sweep up the shreds of cardboard they remove, one little feline mouthful at a time. Here's Louie's latest creation in a favorite warm spot next to the refrigerator, being used by Sylvie. It's so nice to know that my cats are being artistic, not destructive...and apparently they have a lot of company out there!

It's Feline Art!
I learned something wonderful from Goldie and Banshee today, two great cats who live in the woods in Canada. When Fuzzy puts his ears back and tears up a cardboard box, he's not being naughty or displaying displaced aggression...no...he's using it as a muse for his creative impulses! Here's the artist in the process of creating. That's a box full of wonderful goodies from my fellow quilter and kitty lover Betsy. I still need to send her a thank you note (aargh) which is why i left the box out...and now almost every evening Fuzzy works at sculpting it. Here's what his sculpture currently looks like:

What wonderful creations! My two just play in boxes
ReplyDeleteVery nice job on the big box. Boxes are the best!

Uhm, yes. Art. Mom wouldn't be thrilled either. There's always the "hope" that the artist will get tired of the possibilities with one material an broaden his repertoire... ; )

Ha Ha Ha!!!!!
ReplyDeleteFuzzy and Louie!!!! That is great! So expressive. Such use of dimension and texture.
Your parents must have learned from the masters and passed their knowledge on to you.
We should have a cardboard retreat weekend sometime. I don't mean to brag but the Music Man actually MAKES cardboard and cardboard boxes for a job. I can get us anything we want.
Don't forget your beret!

creative recycling at its best! let's hear it for cardboard and the hours of fun it provides for our cats!
ReplyDeleteHaha, great post! I do love a naughty cat! Our Bac loves to steal the loo roll and run around with it! We try not to encourage it, as it's expensive, and he would destroy the whole roll in seconds! It is funny to watch though! Hope you have a great weekend! x
ReplyDeleteLOL! That will help me look at our little shreds of cardboard in a whole new way.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for pointing me in the direction of the ebay listing, but guess where I finally found it? At In Stitches, which is a perfect excuse to go there on Sunday, when they're having the trunk show!! I could have sworn I checked there before, but perhaps not!
We love shredding boxes up too. We didn't know we were so creative. We'll tell Mom straight away ... 'cos she usually moans about da mess.
ReplyDeleteHello fellow artists!!! Why does it take our humans so long to understand our need to express our creativity?

Ellie May is our artist cat...her talent became evident when she had her own gallery. She has retired to the art studio where she continues to create. Her medium is paper and paper bags. She is well accomplished with torn paper sculptures.
ReplyDeleteI have saved many of her works over the years!
I just have to make sure she has a supply of her own paper materials and she doesn't start using mine!
Nan
Geez, my cats do the same thing, only not to this extreme! I'm astounded by the big box. It's nearly destroyed, and the trays, well, looks like they have fringe! Mine chew the edges a little, but not like this!
ReplyDeleteI want to get a photo of my cat chasing the red laser light across a plain wall between our living room and kitchen. If I gave her paint she could put a mural on that wall.
We used to do that to boxes too, but not anymore. We've found napping is a much better use of our creative juices. You asked on Parker's blog what a squillion is - it started as a large ceramic cat that was found 2 years ago at the Green Wall shelter (Wallgreen's Drugstore). They were found in various places and shipped everywhere. Now there are vSquillions - virtual squillions that you can adopt from the Cat Blogosphere. The word squillion as a unit of measure became know because squillions of Squillions were shipped.

Your mom observes very good: Our mom does study Latin American Studies (politics, history, literature and Spanish). The upcoming exam is the one in literature and it comes with a translation and one big question to be answered. In 4 hours total. Mom has to get all the English out of her head! ; )
