Not Exactly Signs of Spring

Yesterday (Saturday) morning, i saw "my" woodchuck running across the backyard, the first i've seen him (or her) since the fall. He still looks fairly plump, which is good, it means he made it through the winter in good condition.

I heard all sorts of birds singing, and a flock of grackles and redwing blackbirds landed at the feeder and made musical metallic noises while strutting around and eating. I have two tiny crocuses open. Once again, my snowdrops have disappeared. They either don't like the spot i insist on planting them in, or else a vole or squirrel is getting them.

Then i heard the weather forecast...yikes, anywhere from four to ten (or more) inches of snow forecast! This morning, we had a light pretty snow fall. There was a Cooper's hawk in the maple tree right near my back door. I hoped she wasn't going to stay around to pick off birds off the feeder, but it was still wonderful to see this powerful raptor up close.

Now it's snowing.

  1. We sure are having strange weather. Spring one day and winter the next!

  2. Uh oh! We hope our Spring doesn't go away again. Then we can send you some over! Those birds sound cool, we love watching birds too.

  3. Yikes! More snow! I thought spring was coming, but it's gone rainy and grey again today....We have zillions of snowdrops in the woods behind the cottage, and lovely little crocusses too, and tiny weeny daffodils, called narcisus I think....Anyway, they're so lovely, and a sure sign springtime is just around the corner (But I hope we don't get your snow!!)

  7. Paula, check out the earliest Sooty stuff you can on You Tube - not the later, modern animated stuff. They are little glove puppets, and there is adorable music! It's so old-fashioned and cute, not like now!
There is a young guy with a beard, Matthew Corbett, he's Harry's son, and he took over from his dad. Oh, it's so lovely! It's very 'English', if you know what I mean - you'll love it! Sooty rules OK!

  8. We just read about poor Sylvie. We hope her tail is healing nicely.

When Cinza was first brought home our humans used Rescue Remedy and some kind of diffuser stuff (the woman can't remember what it's called, but pet stores should carry it).

Good luck, it can be stressful when the kitties don't get along.

  9. We're not snowing, but it's cold here. Hope your kitties are doing better. Poor Sylvie.
Thanks for your MD advice. I will take that into cosideration. (I'm sure I'll be fine in another day or two.)

  11. Every time you think spring is on it's way...something like snow comes to make you realize it is still winter....

  12. We got nearly a foot of snow yesterday, just after we had glimpses of the ground!

  13. Hello everyone, thanks so much for visiting! It does feel like Spring should be here soon...the light is so much yellower, the birds are singing despite the snow, i pruned back a broken dogwood branch and saw that the cambium is green so i think that means the tree is awake and the sap is rising. After i take care of overdue acknowledgement of an award, i'll post an "almost Spring" picture.
