Books and Cats, Cats and Books
I ran across this photo essay on "Books and cats, a love affair in photos" in the LA Times book news and information blog http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/jacketcopy/2008/11/books-and-cats.html. It looks like the editor must have trolled through Flickr looking for cats on books and these guys are mighty cute.

Greetings from across the pond!
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame, the link to the photo essay isn't working - I'll try again later, maybe it will fix itself!
Hope you're all well and keeping warm!
Best Wishes,
Liz
Hi Liz. Oops another operator error! somehow i got the link in there with http:// twice. I hope you'll try it again (and keep letting me know about things that aren't working right). I'm having a fiendishly busy day at work. Even though it's only 3:19 in the afternoon, the sky is dark grey and the roads look damp...yuck! I hope your stiff neck is better soon.
ReplyDeleteLove it! Izzy, the Siamese with whom I grew up, was obsessed with a used book my brother picked up at a store in Germantown, a Philly neighborhood, back in the early 70s. He (Izzy, not my brother) would stand at the bookcase, huffing the spine for several minutes, and then turn, mouth open, as if to say, "Man, does that stink good!" The previous owner must've had a cat, mouse problem, or remarkably odorous house. Or maybe Izzy just really dug Wordsworth.
ReplyDeleteHi quiltcat, those photos remind me of the cats that used to live in the Kennebunk Book Port. I haven't though about them in years. There was a succession of cats over the years in the quaint old building. The bookshop was on the 2nd floor and a Candle Shop below it. The cat's had their own couch! I have a drawing of the building and had drawn some of the cats over the years. I'll put them on my blog. There's a funny story about the cat, Tiddles, a calico, who hung out at the Congregational Church near the Post Office. The congregation thought she was their cat.It seems that she used to attend services and weddings etc. She had a double life for the BookPort thought she was their cat!
ReplyDeleteSo many people knew her.
Also, a friend once told us about a library cat, but I can't quite recall which Library it was. I know there are quite a few libraries that have cats as residents.
Take care!
Nan
PS. I just found my painted prints of Tiddles and actually she had 2 names, the Book Port called her Ginger and at the Church she was known as Tiddles Too! It took quite some time before they realized her double identity.

Hi Nan. I'm glad you found your paintings of Tiddles. It sounds like you've got the makings of a wonderful children's book (a bit like Six Dinner Sid but with a Maine flavor). There's a great new book out about a library cat called Dewey The Small Town Library Cat, by Vicki Myron. His full name was Dewey Readmore Books. *g*
ReplyDeleteThere seem to have been an embarrassment of Tiddles. That was the name of a gigantically fat cat who lived in the ladies' loo in London's Paddington Station. She was in regal, lardy residence when I first visited in 1982. People left monetary offerings on a little plate, as the reclining Tiddles testily endured the attentions of her adoring public. I have pix; if I can dig 'em up, I'll post 'em on my woefully neglected blog.
ReplyDeleteHi Catbird. I've heard about that Tiddles from cat loving friends in the U.K.! Would love to see your pix...your blog could use some fresh life!
ReplyDeleteYesss! Link working! Neck alot better, thanks!
ReplyDeleteSee you soon!
